Local Youth Basketball Academy Expands to Reach Hundreds More Young Athletes

2025: Year of the Iron Tiger!

For years, basketball on the Central Coast has offered exciting opportunities for representative players, but something has been missing – a clear, simple pathway for young athletes and their families to enter the sport at the local level. Unlike soccer or rugby league, which offer well-established club systems to introduce kids to the game, basketball has lacked a similar structure… until now.

Iron Tigers Basketball Club is changing the game. Launching in Term 1 of 2025, Iron Tigers is set to transform the way children access basketball on the Central Coast, providing a clear entry point into local competitions with an emphasis on skill development, playing time, and fostering a love for the sport.

Making Basketball Accessible for All

Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia, but for many families, getting their kids started in the game has been confusing and frustrating. Parents often struggle to find organised teams, experienced coaching, and a supportive pathway that prioritises development and enjoyment.

Iron Tigers Basketball Club is solving this problem by providing:

  • Structured pathways for players to progress from beginners to experienced athletes.
  • Dedicated coaching with qualified and passionate coaches at every level.
  • Local competitions that prioritise inclusion, fun, and equal playing opportunities.

“We wanted to make it as simple as possible for parents to get their kids involved in basketball, just like they do with soccer or rugby league,” says Club Director Matt Shorrock. “The Iron Tigers model focuses on balancing skill development and enjoyment, ensuring every player gets equal time on the court and a chance to grow.”

A Club System Unlike Anything on the Coast

The club will field teams in the CCB Terrigal domestic competition and is exploring opportunities to enter teams in other competitions across Niagara Park, Woy Woy, PCYC Bateau Bay, and Lakehaven. By offering teams in multiple age groups – Under-12s, Under-14s, Under-16s, and Under-18s for both boys and girls – Iron Tigers caters to both new and experienced players.

With a maximum of 8 players per team, Iron Tigers ensures every athlete receives ample playing time, personalised coaching, and opportunities to improve. The club operates under a philosophy that playing equals development, a refreshing approach that gives every child a chance to build confidence and skill.

Close-to-Rep Experiences for Committed Players

In addition to regular domestic competitions, Iron Tigers players will have access to exclusive invitational tournaments not typically available to local teams. Examples include the Big Banana Coffs Classic in Coffs Harbour and the Seaside Classic in Port Macquarie. These events give Iron Tigers athletes the chance to compete at a higher level, offering a close-to-rep experience while continuing to play in a supportive club environment.

Building a Community for the Future

Iron Tigers is more than just a basketball club – it’s a community. By creating opportunities for kids of all ages and skill levels, the club is helping to build the next generation of basketball players on the Central Coast.

“Basketball has so much to offer, but we knew the system needed to improve for local families,” says Club Director Matt Shorrock. “Iron Tigers is about more than winning games – it’s about creating pathways, building confidence, and fostering a love for the game that will last a lifetime.”

With its simple, organised approach, Iron Tigers Basketball Club is set to welcome hundreds of young athletes to the game, ensuring that basketball finally has a club system to rival soccer, rugby league, and other mainstream sports on the Coast.
